Because I saw Industrial Design as a way to solve human-machine interaction problems, I became interested with Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). Therefore, I did an independent study with Professor Gavriel Salvendy in an interdisciplinary research project collaborative with the Department of Industrial Engineering, Psychology and Visual and Performing Art.
Previous studies in identifying factors related to search efficiency resulted in empirical models that are hard to apply. In order to overcome the limitations inherent in descriptive empirical methods, a model of visual search, Guided Search (GS) model in Cognitive Science, which has been validated in perceptual task, was extended to HCI (human computer interaction) settings. Testing the validity of GS model in HCI visual search tasks provided insights in understanding the perceptual factors related to the reduction of search time for HCI visual search tasks.
